The Dark Skull
I wanted to make this skull look kind of like it was being unearthed. Like an archaeologist uncovering some ancient skull from thousands of years ago and wiping the top soil off to reveal this brittle, boney face.
The dark background really brings all of those white details and tones to your attention.
Top of a Skeleton
The way the spinal chord connects to the head always fascinated me with skulls and skeletons. I don't know why but as soon as you give a skull a neck and a set of shoulders it becomes instantly more human and relatable.
Getting the lighting just right in the shoulder was really difficult but the outcome is ace.
A Simple Skull
A humble gentleman. I wanted to keep this one simple and as a result you get a big, bold skull that's really impactful. Just a skull, the age old symbol of death, encapsulated in all it's glory.
The Big Red Skull
I haven't done a properly colorful background.... ever? I've been referring to this guy in my head as 'Big Skull' 'The Big Red' and 'Red Boy'.
I love the contrast in black and white realism and the big bold red background to really make this skull pop. It's totally different to what I normally paint.
Skull of Tyr
My first ever skull that features some colour. It's sort of a blend of surrealism and mythology. The rune carving on the forehead symbolises war and aptly this skull is belongs to the Norse god of war, Tyr, I painted most of this in front of a crowd in Wolverhampton city market.
